Northside Friends’ Ministry on Racism Committee has contributed from its budget to Nita’s Love Train, which has supported residents of Gary, IN through a two week power outage and its aftermath. They are still recovering from the destruction brought by massive storms in August.
Nita Tennyson runs Nita’s Love Train which supports Black and Brown single-parent families in Chicago. The Love Train redistributes funds for emergencies to families who need it in the form of groceries, baby supplies like diapers and infant formula, rent assistance, heaters, and much more. Nita does all this work while also working a full-time job herself.
Nita’s Love Train is currently doing distributions in Gary to support those who had been out of power because of the massive storm two weeks ago. Though power was just recently restored, residents are still struggling with the destruction wrought by the storms, compounded by the lengthy loss of electricity after falling trees decimated the local power grid. Many are dealing with spoiled food, and health impacts from elevated summer temperatures.
“I had the pleasure of meeting Nita and working with her back in 2020 around the time she founded the Love Train, and it’s been inspiring to see how the work has grown and continued all these years!” says MoR Committee member Julie Liang. “Please follow and share her efforts and, if you're able, donate to support the Love Train.” To learn more:
