Northside Friends has established monthly topics for Second Hour, the after-meeting discussion group that focuses on a range of topics. On Jan. On Jan. 17, guest speaker Paul Buckley, ILYM Field Secretary and historian, provided background on Friends Peace Testimony.
On January 24, the Second Hour discussion turns its attention to Haiti, in the aftermath of the devastating Jan. 12 2010.
On January 31, Second Hour focuses on "Intentionality."
In February, Second Hour Sessions will attend to creating Northside's annual State of Society Report, the role of Vocal Ministry and an "open session" Second Hour for general discussion over brunch.
On January 24, the Second Hour discussion turns its attention to Haiti, in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake earlier this month. A simple meal fundraiser is also scheduled.
On January 31, Second Hour focuses on Intentionality Toward Meeting, and how attenders and members can and should engage with meeting.
In February, Second Hour Sessions will attend to creating Northside's State of Society Report (Feb. 7), prepared annually for delivery to Illinois Yearly Meeting; ; a Feb. 14 "open session" Second Hour which is reserved for general discussion (sometimes this is held over brunch); and the Role of Vocal Ministry in Meeting (Feb. 21) sponsored by Ministry and Counsel (the committee charged with guiding the spiritual life of Northside Friends Meeting).
About Second Hour gatherings: The Second Hour period after worship is devoted to a multitude of purposes, and includes Business Meeting, Meeting for Healing, and a variety of focused topics. The topics provide an oppportunity for members to get to know each other on a deeper level, and explore how Quakerism speaks to the concerns of contemporary life. Northside Friends “Second Hour,” which follows regular Meeting for Worship most Sundays, is devoted to a range of discussion topics, presentations, and focused worship. Second Hour for the First Sunday is ordinarily devoted to Meeting for Worship with a Concern for Business—the monthly gathering for attending to the Meeting’s business affairs. Second and Fourth Sundays are devoted to various topics, such as those listed above. Third Sunday is typically a Meeting for Worship with a Concern for Healing, a traditional Quaker practice that is gaining renewed interest.
