Northside Friends Helping Haiti |
Global efforts to help Haiti recover from the devastating January 12 earthquake also touch close to home for Northside Friends in Chicago. The Quaker Meeting will host a "Second Hour" discussion group on Sunday, Jan. 24 immediately after Worship. Then the following Friday, January 29, at 6:30 pm, a Simple Meal fundraiser will be held at the home of Peter McMahan and Becky Beachy. All Northside Friends and guests are welcome to this simple vegetarian Haitian-style meal on Friday, Jan. 29. Food contributions are not necessary but welcome. Financial donations will be collected at the event for Haiti relief. (Those joining the monthly Northside Critical Mass bicycle ride at 5:30 p.m. that evening can cycle over afterward.) Among organizations that Northside Friends have suggested for support are Partners in Health, a medical organization directed by Dr. Paul Farmer, already on the ground in Haiti and that has been providing free medical treatment for more than 1,000 patients annually. Also suggested for support is RARA Designs, a Haiti cooperative that recycles refuse into fashionable items. The Jan. 24 Second Hour focus on Haiti, one of the running series of Second Hour discussions that follow Worship at Northside Chicago Friends Meeting, will reflect on how Northside Meeting should Friends' long history of involvment in disaster relief. One way we respond is to hold individuals and communities in the Light. What does it mean to hold those who are suffering in the Light? Is there anything calling us as a Meeting to respond corporately to the suffering in Haiti? |
